The short answer
An accent wall is a single wall covered in a bold or textured wallpaper to create a focal point without papering the whole room. We assess and prime the wall, plan the pattern so it centers on the feature you care about, then hang, match and trim each strip for a seamless finish.
One papered wall can change how an entire room feels. It gives a plain bedroom a focal point behind the headboard, defines a dining area inside an open floor plan, or adds personality to a home office that shows up on video calls every day. True Wallpaper Installation hangs accent walls in Fort Lauderdale houses and condos and in the surrounding Broward cities, and because the job involves only one surface, every detail on it gets noticed. A crooked first strip or a visible seam has nowhere to hide. This page walks through how we decide whether an accent wall suits your space, how we get the surface ready, how the paper actually goes up, and what you can do to keep it looking sharp in our humid climate.
When a single wall is the smarter choice
An accent wall makes sense when you want impact without committing every surface in the room to a pattern. Large-scale florals, dark botanicals, metallic geometrics and textured grasscloth can feel overwhelming on four walls but look deliberate on one. It is also a practical route when you love an expensive paper and only want to buy enough rolls for a single surface.
The wall you choose matters as much as the paper. In most rooms the best candidate is the one your eye lands on first when you walk in: the wall behind a bed, a sofa, a dining table or a fireplace. A wall broken up by several windows or doors rarely works, because the pattern gets chopped into small pieces and loses its effect. In many Fort Lauderdale condos, the obvious feature is the solid wall opposite the balcony slider, since the glass side is mostly window anyway.
- Bedrooms: the headboard wall, so the pattern frames the bed
- Living rooms: the wall behind the sofa or television
- Dining areas: the wall that defines the space in an open layout
- Entryways and powder rooms: small surfaces that can handle drama
Preparing and priming the wall
Because guests look straight at an accent wall, surface flaws show more than they would in a corner. We start by checking the wall under raking light to find dents, nail pops, drywall tape lines and patches. In older concrete-block homes across Broward, interior walls are often plaster over block, sometimes with a sprayed texture; those need a skim coat and sanding before paper will sit flat. If the wall was painted with a glossy or semi-gloss finish, we scuff it so primer can bond.
Next comes a wallpaper primer suited to the paper and the surface. Primer seals porous plaster and patching compound so the adhesive does not soak in unevenly, and it makes future removal much easier. Exterior-facing walls get extra attention: if we find signs of moisture coming through the block, we recommend addressing that before covering it, since trapped dampness is a common reason paper bubbles or lifts in South Florida.
How we install it, step by step
With the wall sound and primed, installation follows a steady sequence. The order matters because each step sets up the next.
- Measure the height and width and confirm the number of strips needed, adding allowance for the pattern repeat and trimming at top and bottom.
- Decide where the pattern begins. We usually center a major motif on the wall or on the furniture that will sit in front of it, then work outward so both edges finish evenly.
- Snap a plumb line instead of trusting the corner, since few corners in any house are perfectly straight.
- Cut strips in order, matching the pattern from one to the next, and number them on the back so nothing gets hung out of sequence.
- Apply adhesive, or activate pre-pasted paper, and allow it to book for the time the manufacturer specifies so the paper relaxes before hanging.
- Hang each strip, smoothing from the center out to push air toward the edges, and butt the seams tightly without overlapping.
- Roll seams lightly, trim cleanly at the ceiling line, baseboard and any outlets, and wipe away excess paste before it dries.
What influences the cost
We price accent walls after seeing them, because two walls of the same size can need very different amounts of work. The main factors are the condition of the surface, the material you choose, the pattern repeat, and the size of the wall including its height.
A smooth, freshly painted drywall wall needs little beyond primer, while a textured plaster wall or one with old paper still on it can need stripping, skim coating and drying time first. Unpasted, delicate or hand-printed papers and natural grasscloth take more care than a standard pre-pasted product. A large pattern repeat means more waste per strip and more time spent aligning motifs. Tall walls in two-story living rooms or stairwells require scaffolding or extra ladders and more cuts, which add labor.
Keeping your accent wall looking new
Most accent walls see less wear than hallways or kitchens, but a little attention keeps them crisp. Dust the surface now and then with a soft, dry cloth or a vacuum brush attachment. For washable vinyl or coated papers, a damp sponge with mild soap handles fingerprints; for grasscloth and other natural fibers, skip water entirely and blot spots gently.
In our climate, the biggest threat is humidity cycling. Keep the air conditioning running steadily rather than shutting it off for long stretches, especially from May through October. Avoid hanging heavy frames with adhesive strips directly on the paper, and if you notice a seam starting to lift, call us early; a small edge is far easier to re-adhere than a strip that has curled for weeks.
