The short answer
Grasscloth can work well in Lauderdale Lakes if the room stays air-conditioned and the wall is dry and smooth. We inspect the rolls, prime the wall, use minimal clear paste and hang panels so shading changes look intentional.
Grasscloth is woven from plant fibers such as sisal, jute, arrowroot or seagrass and glued to a paper backing. It brings a warm, handmade texture that printed paper cannot copy, and it pairs naturally with the relaxed coastal style many Lauderdale Lakes owners like. It is also one of the touchiest materials to hang in a subtropical climate. The fibers absorb water, stain if paste touches the face, and every roll shows slight color differences. True Wallpaper Installation works on grasscloth projects throughout Lauderdale Lakes, about four miles west of our Fort Lauderdale shop in Broward County, and we treat each one as a careful, slow job rather than a quick hang.
Is grasscloth right for your room?
The honest answer depends on the space more than on taste. A primary bedroom, home office, formal living room or dining area that stays cool and dry is a strong fit. A full bathroom with a shower, a laundry room, or a kitchen backsplash zone is not, because steam and splashes leave water marks on natural fiber that cannot be cleaned out.
Homes that are closed up for long stretches in summer with the AC turned off or set very high are another concern. Indoor humidity climbs fast in Broward County when the system is idle, and grasscloth can ripple or lose adhesion. If the home is occupied and cooled steadily, the material behaves well.
- Good fit: bedrooms, offices, living and dining rooms, ceilings in dry rooms
- Use caution: powder rooms without a shower, hallways next to an entry door
- Avoid: full baths, laundry rooms, areas behind sinks or cooktops
Why the color varies from panel to panel
Each strand is natural, so dye takes differently along its length. When two panels sit side by side, you may see one a shade lighter. That is a feature of the product and is called shading or paneling. Manufacturers usually note it on the label. What an installer controls is how those differences are arranged.
Before cutting anything, we unroll and compare every roll under the room's own light. We number panels, sometimes reverse alternate strips, and place the most closely matched pieces on the wall people see first. Slight shifts then end up in corners, behind furniture or above doorways.
Wall prep in concrete-block and ranch homes
Much of the housing stock in Lauderdale Lakes is block construction with plaster, or older frame ranches finished in textured drywall. Grasscloth is thicker than standard paper and hides minor flaws, but it will not bridge cracks or deep texture, and it telegraphs ridges in raking light. We repair and smooth the surface, then check exterior walls for moisture coming through the masonry.
A pigmented primer comes next. Grasscloth backing can be thin enough that a dark wall color shows through the weave, so we often tint the primer close to the background tone of the paper.
Our hanging method
Paste goes on the backing with a roller, never so heavy that it bleeds through. We let it relax for the time the maker recommends, then set the panel, press it with a soft brush instead of a plastic smoother that could crush the fibers, and trim with fresh blades so the edges do not fray.
Seams in grasscloth are butted, and they will always be visible to some degree because the weave does not match across panels. Our job is to make them straight, tight and even. Any paste that touches the face is blotted immediately with a dry cloth, not scrubbed, since water can leave a ring.
Looking after grasscloth in a humid climate
Keep the air conditioning running, especially from May through October when afternoon storms push humidity up. Dust the wall occasionally with a soft vacuum brush. Avoid spray cleaners near it. If a pet or child marks a low area, call us about patching one panel rather than trying to clean it, because scrubbing almost always makes the spot larger.
If a hurricane threat means the power may be out for a while, it is worth knowing that a few humid days rarely ruin a properly hung wall. Extended flooding or leaks are another matter, and those panels usually need replacement.
